How lithium can replace coal and ore for Ukraine’s economy – column by Denys Aloshyn

Since the start of the Russian invasion in 2014, Ukraine lost access to vast coal deposits in the east of the country and offshore oil and gas fields in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. In 2022, after a full-scale invasion, Ukrainian producers significantly reduced iron ore extraction.
All of these factors have had a negative impact on Ukraine’s economy. To quickly compensate for such losses, new avenues for economic development need to be explored. One potential solution is the extraction and processing of lithium and other rare minerals that exist in Ukrainian subsoils and are in demand globally.
