Polokhivske lithium deposit: responsible mining through environmental impact assessment
October 17, 2024
ULM has conducted an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) to ensure environmental safety during the extraction of petalite lithium ores at Polokhivske deposit. Based on this assessment, the company has developed and will implement measures to minimise any environmental risks, ensuring the conservation of natural resources, clean air and water, and safety for local communities. The EIA procedure was carried out in accordance with the Law of Ukraine “On Environmental Impact Assessment” and ensured timely, adequate and effective public information at all stages.
According to the EIA, during the construction and operation of the mine, air pollutant emissions will be controlled and pollutant concentrations will not exceed the maximum permissible levels. This ensures that the air in the region remains clean.
To minimise the impact on the water environment, the company has developed a system of measures that includes water supply and sewage, which will ensure the reuse of mine water, reducing the burden on natural water resources. Waste water treatment facilities will ensure that wastewater does not pollute nearby streams, rivers, reservoirs and groundwater.
The EIA also included an assessment of the noise and vibration levels that will be generated during the works. The results of the study showed that these indicators will remain within the permissible limits. It should also be noted that after the completion of mining operations, the field will be fully rehabilitated. All industrial facilities will be dismantled and the land restored to its natural state.
ULM understands that environmental impact is an important issue for local communities. That is why holding public hearings (a component of the public discussion of the EIA of planned activities) has become an important part of the EIA process. This event was held in the format of a video conference on 18 September 2024, which allowed us to attract a wider audience and ensure that all stakeholders participated in the discussion.
The main purpose of the public hearings was to ensure transparency and inform the community about the planned activities subject to environmental impact assessment. Participants had the opportunity to express their opinions and suggestions on the project, which contributed to the active participation of local residents in the decision-making process. After the videoconference, ULM prepared written responses to the comments and suggestions, which were submitted to the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources of Kirovograd Regional State Administration, the organiser of the public hearings. Taking into account the environmental impact assessment report, public discussion report, comments and suggestions, the Department prepared and submitted to ULM mining a binding EIA Conclusion.
ULM operates in accordance with all requirements of Ukrainian legislation and international environmental standards. The environmental impact assessment is a guarantee that mining at Polokhivske will be safe and responsible.
