Tesla is refusing tested batteries. What does Ukrainian lithium have to do with this?
August 18, 2023
Electric car manufacturers use two main lithium-ion battery technologies – nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) and lithium iron phosphate (LFP). Each of them has its advantages and disadvantages. However, over the last 5 years, most car manufacturers have started transitioning to lithium iron phosphate batteries, including Elon Musk’s Tesla.
This became possible due to the development of iron-based technology, pursued by leading Chinese battery developers. LFP batteries are cheaper to manufacture, but still require lithium. This mineral is in short supply worldwide, so there is a search for new sources that will have the mineral of the appropriate quality.
“In 2020, from the petalite concentrate of our deposit, the first battery-grade lithium carbonate for LFP technology was produced,” says Denys Aloshyn, Chief Strategy Officer at LLC “UkrLithiumMining”.
